While third party only is the minimum requirement, you can also opt for comprehensive which covers the most, and third party fire and theft sits in the middle, providing cover if your motorcycle is stolen or sets on fire. This type of insurance can be used for scooter and moped cover too.

What is third party fire and theft insurance?

The motorcycle fire and theft insurance cover takes the basic cover of third party only but includes additional cover. If your bike or scooter is stolen or damaged beyond repair in a fire, you will have cover to receive a payout that will allow you to buy a similar motorcycle of the same age in the same condition. If your stolen motorbike is recovered, your insurer will pay to have any damage put right. While this covers you for more than the most basic insurance policy, it still won’t cover any damage to your bike you if you have an accident that is your fault. It will, however, cover losses for anyone else involved if it is your fault.

What does Bennetts' third party fire and theft motorcycle insurance cover?

If your bike or scooter is stolen or damaged beyond repair in a fire, you will receive a payout that will allow you to buy a similar motorcycle of the equivalent market value (please note: this does not apply if you have a classic bike policy and have opted for agreed value. You will then receive the agreed value instead). If your stolen motorbike is recovered, your insurer will pay to have any damage put right.

If you have an accident, third party fire and theft insurance will cover losses and damage to anyone else involved. This could mean fixing their vehicle or repairing their property or it could mean compensation for income lost through their inability to work or fulfil other obligations.

Here’s what is included in the third party fire and theft motorcycle insurance policy from Bennetts:

  • 90 days EU insurance cover

  • Insured to ride other bikes (with the owner’s permission - terms and conditions apply).

  • Multi-bike policy option

  • A 24-hour claims line

  • The most common modifications covered at no extra cost.

  • New bike replacement (terms and conditions apply)

For your peace of mind, you can also purchase additional cover options. This includes personal accident cover, cover for your helmet and leathers and legal expenses cover which safeguards you from the costs of an accident which isn’t your fault. This is particularly beneficial to have alongside third party fire and theft.

What doesn’t third party fire and theft motorbike insurance cover?

If the accident was your fault, maybe because you misjudged a corner or it was caused by something like slipping on ice, wet leaves or diesel, then your third party fire and theft motorcycle insurance will cover damage to the other party’s vehicle or health, but not to yours. If you have an accident where there isn’t another party who is clearly responsible, third party fire and theft insurance doesn’t cover the cost of fixing your bike, repairing your injuries or any loss of earnings.

What is the difference between third party and comprehensive bike insurance?

Motorbike fire and theft insurance is one of two third party policies. The other is third party only which is the most basic one. Neither cover you if you have an accident although they do provide cover for anyone else involved. Comprehensive offers everything third party does while also covering you for any accidents, whether they are your fault or not and even if it doesn’t involve anyone else at all.

  • Third party only:

This type of policy only covers losses to other parties involved in the accident (if the accident was your fault) and doesn’t cover loss or damage to your motorcycle from theft, attempted theft or fire.

  • Third party fire and theft:

This provides the same cover as third party only but also covers you should your bike be stolen, damaged while a theft is attempted or if it catches on fire.

  • Comprehensive:

This cover will repair damage or replace your motorbike or scooter if you have an accident that is your fault or when no other party is involved.

What can affect the cost of third party fire and theft motorbike insurance?

Several factors can affect the price of your third party fire and theft insurance. This includes your age – those under 25 often pay more because younger riders are more likely to make a claim.

If you have previously made a claim, even if that is on car insurance, you could find that you will have to pay slightly more. Likewise, those with bigger and more powerful motorbikes may have higher costs. This is relevant if you are looking at moped or scooter fire and theft insurance too. Will I save money buying third party fire and theft motorcycle insurance?

Not necessarily, you won’t always save money buying third party fire and theft motorcycle insurance. Sometimes, you can save money by taking out comprehensive insurance cover.

Insurance premiums are built from a person’s risk profile and so if you are a low risk then you won’t pay that much more for comprehensive motorcycle insurance than for third party fire and theft, and in fact sometimes it may save you money.

That’s why it could be cheaper to deal directly with a broker instead of a comparison site because you get a tailored quote based on a broader set of questions and data.
